The Political and Economic Thought of Blessed Fulton J. Sheen

Venerable Fulton J. Sheen is best known as the television host of the Emmy-award winning Life Is Worth Living (1952-1957), but for decades before the show Sheen produced academic and popular works on a range of subjects, including political and economic thought. Sheen preached "Americanism," or a political consensus rooted in the common beliefs of Protestants, Catholics, and Jews expressed in the Declaration of Independence. Americanism stood for government for the common good and against totalitarian oppression. In this presentation, I will explain Sheen's views in greater detail and why they are so pressing for understanding the rise of populism, extreme ideology, and our new totalitarian threats abroad.
