Americans are having fewer kids each year, and it's not always obvious why. It's easy to blame costs or selfishness, but those factors can't explain the unprecedented 15-year drop in the birth rate. The real problem is a cultural one: Our culture is family unfriendly in all sorts of ways.

Parenting culture demands too much--time, money, attention--and the results is more anxious kids and parents. Our cultural institutions no longer support parents as they should. And most importantly, our cultural values don't leave room for the sort of sacrifice and love that family requires. Tim Carney will discuss his new book, Family Unfriendly.
