Even before the pandemic, 21st-century Americans belonged to fewer things, knew their neighbors less, went to church less, and had fewer friends than prior generations. This fact—growing alienation in modern life—is behind all of America's social woes, including the opioid crisis and political polarization. It is also a key factor in the retreat from marriage and plummeting birth rates. Turning America around won't be easy, but the key will be rebuilding community by rebuilding family, and rebuilding family by rebuilding community.
