Benjamin Lockerd, Ph.D.

Ben Lockerd holds an M.A. degree from the University of Toronto and a Ph.D. from the University of Connecticut. For 35 years, he was Professor of English at Grand Valley State University in Grand Rapids, Michigan, where he was director of the M.A. Program. He is currently a Research Fellow in the graduate humanities program of the Center for Great Books and Human Flourishing at Faulkner University, Alabama.

He has received the GVSU Alumni Association’s Outstanding Educator Award and the Honors College Outstanding Faculty Member Award.

He is the author of two books:

          The Sacred Marriage: Psychic Integration in “The Faerie Queene” (Bucknell UP, 1987)  and Aethereal Rumours: T. S. Eliot’s Physics and Poetics (Bucknell UP, 1998). He also wrote the introduction to a new edition of Russell Kirk’s book Eliot and His Age and edited a collection of essays entitled T. S. Eliot and Christian Tradition (Fairleigh Dickinson UP, 2014).

Professor Lockerd is past-president of the T. S. Eliot Society. He has published essays on Eliot, as well as on Renaissance literature.

He is married to Micheline Lockerd. They have five children and 12 grandchildren.
