For Orthodox social thought, monastic life is an ideal form of Christian society in which wealth, private property and the rule of law serve the salvation of souls. While often critical of even “Christian” society, monasticism isn’t a rejection of the social order or wider culture but their renewal through a life of prayer, asceticism, hospitality, and philanthropy.
