Leaders have enormous demands on their time, as well as a deep obligation to achieve material results. Most leaders strive to be excellent. Many conclude that it would be irresponsible to dedicate significant time to the discovery of truths about the deepest questions affecting human existence, or at least see that as an avocation to be pursued in some distant period of "free time." I argue, rather, that the pursuit of deep wisdom is fundamental to the project of excellent leadership, and that failing to pursue such wisdom is detrimental to that project.
