The Role of a Free Press in a Democracy

This lecture will examine the importance of a free press to the maintenance of a free and open democratic society. Using various historical and contemporary examples, the lecture will explore the essential traits of a free press, how those traits are surviving in modern society, and how the courts have attempted to protect or recognize these traits. The lecture will also examine how the courts have tried to balance the rights and duties of the press.
