Achievement and the Christian Life

This lecture will explore the human desire for excellence and achievement, asking whether it can be part of a sincere Christian life. I suggest that there is a particularly Christian way of understanding achievement, which removes some of the poison of pride and self-congratulation that so often go along with human striving. Yet the tensions between the two orientations toward life (charity and self-giving versus the ambition to distinguish oneself) do not ever disappear.
